How the electricity bill calculator works
A utility statement usually contains more than a charge for energy. This electricity bill calculator builds a statement estimate from a modeled appliance load, then adds a fixed monthly customer charge and percentage-based taxes and fees. It keeps those parts separate so you can compare each line with a real bill instead of treating every dollar as a kWh charge.
First, watts multiplied by operating hours, billing days, and quantity gives watt-hours; dividing by 1,000 gives billed kilowatt-hours. The energy charge multiplies that kWh estimate by the entered rate in dollars per kWh.
The fixed customer charge is then added once for the selected statement period. The calculator applies the entered taxes-and-fees percentage to the energy charge plus that fixed charge. If a utility taxes a different subtotal, enter an effective percentage that reproduces the statement.
Tiered prices, time-of-use periods, demand charges, fuel adjustments, minimum bills, credits, and local riders need separate treatment. For a close reconciliation, model each energy tier or time period outside this single-rate estimate and compare the named line items with the tariff.
Worked example
A 1,000 W load running 2 hours per day for 30 days uses 60 kWh. At 15¢/kWh, its energy charge is $9.00. Adding a $12 customer charge gives $21.00; applying 5% taxes and fees adds $1.05, for an estimated total bill of $22.05.
How to read the result
Compare energy use, energy charge, fixed charge, and taxes separately against a statement for the same dates. A difference can reveal omitted loads, estimated meter readings, tiered rates, time-of-use pricing, riders, credits, or a tax base that differs from this model.
Planning inputs are deliberately editable because two homes in the same state can have different tariffs, roof conditions, equipment, and operating schedules. Save a scenario with “Copy link,” then change one assumption at a time. This makes the result useful for comparing decisions without implying false precision.
